Today is April 20th or 4/20. It’s the unofficial day of celebration for marijuana smokers. That skunky aroma in the air today will probably be weed. This is the second-last time 4/20 will be celebrated while weed is still illegal in Canada. Legalization legislation will kick in by mid-2018, subject to parliamentary approval. A little over 40% of Canadian adults admit they have smoked marijuana.
4/20 is a worldwide observance. It’s an unofficial counterculture holiday that is based on the simple premise of smoking some cannabis and being happy. According to the editor of High Times, the term “4/20” originated at San Rafael High School, in 1971, among a group of about a dozen pot-smoking students who called themselves the Waldos. The term was shorthand for the time of day (4:10pm) the group would meet, at the campus statue of Louis Pasteur, to smoke pot. Intent on developing their own discreet language, they made 420 a code for a time to get high.
