Today Toronto will experience it’s first rush hours under a major change to downtown driving rules. Yesterday a new pilot project kicked off that forces all traffic on King St, between Jarvis and Bathurst St, to turn right after they have gone one block. No through traffic is allowed. Drivers also cannot make any left-hand turns. This is to accommodate TTC streetcars. The TTC says more than 65,000 people use the King streetcar during the week, but it’s too slow because of traffic congestion. Public taxis will be exempt from the new rules but only between 10:00pm – 5:00am.
The fine will be $110 for anyone caught breaking the rules. The officer can also assign two demerit points. Police are treating this week as an education-week. Drivers will not be penalized. Instead, they will be given a warnings and information explaining the new rules.
