In what is sure to raise tensions in the Middle East, today US President Donald Trump will officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Trump will also instruct the State Department to begin the (multi-year) process of moving the American embassy from Tel Aviv to the holy city. US officials note almost all of Israel’s government agencies and parliament are in Jerusalem, not in embassy-laden Tel Aviv. This will Fulfill a Trump campaign pledge. Moving the embassy to contested Jerusalem is intensely opposed by Arab, Muslim and some European leaders, and Palestinian groups have threatened widespread protests.
