The Prime Minister of New Zealand calls it one of their darkest days. As many as 49 people are believed dead and 20 or more others are injured after a pair of shootings at mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. Four people are in custody. A man who claimed responsibility for the shootings left a 74-page anti-immigrant manifesto in which he explained who he was and his reasoning for his deranged actions. Police are urging people in Christchurch to stay indoors, and avoid mosques anywhere in New Zealand.
The attack was live streamed on Facebook however, a spokeswoman for Facebook New Zealand, Mia Garlick, said videos which appeared to show the Christchurch shootings have been taken down. “New Zealand Police alerted us to a video on Facebook shortly after the livestream commenced and we quickly removed both the shooter’s Facebook and Instagram accounts and the video,” the spokeswoman said. New Zealand police have asked social media users to not share the video which has already been distributed widely online.
