Fallout From Donald Trump Referring To Haiti And African Nations As Shithole Countries

Critics are accusing U-S President Trump of racism for calling countries in Africa, Central America, and the Caribbean — in his words – “shithole countries.” The bluntly vulgar slur came during a bipartisan immigration meeting Thursday in the Oval Office, with Trump going on to say he wants to see more immigrants coming from countries like Norway. The NAACP is accusing Trump of “lowbrow, callous and unfiltered racism.” The organization says Trump’s decision to use profanity is not only a low mark for this president, it’s a low point for America. The president of Haiti has summoned America’s top diplomat in that country to a meeting Friday.

Representatives from the African Union continental body are telling The Associated Press they are “frankly alarmed” over comments attributed to US President Donald Trump. AU spokeswoman Ebba Kalondo suggested that given the historical reality of how many Africans arrived in the United States as slaves, Trump’s statement flies in the face of all accepted behaviour and practice African governments find themselves in an awkward position because as top recipients of US aid, some hesitated to jeopardize it by criticizing Trump. A spokesman for South Sudan’s government, which benefits from US aid money, said they had no comment since the vulgar slur was not aimed specifically at their country.
