Instagram is updating the app to be more gender inclusive. Starting this week, Instagram is adding new gender options to its app, so that users can choose which term they most identify with. The feature will be available for both iOS and Android users. Users can edit their gender selection by tapping the Edit Profile button on their account, then selecting “Gender.” There, they can choose from “Female,” “Male,” “Prefer Not to Say” or “Custom.” After selecting Custom, they can type in a custom identity, such as “Gender Non-conforming,” “Non-binary,” “Queer” or whatever term they identify with. This information will not appear on users’ public-facing Instagram profile. Instagram said it chose to expand its gender selection options in order to be more inclusive and reflective of how people self-identify today.
