This morning Scott Fox & Kat Callaghan talked to a man who witnessed yesterday’s crash that closed the QEW in Burlington. In the interview, the unnamed man describes how he parked his car on the highway and jumped over the concrete median to save a small child from the vehicle as it burst into flames. Listen to the audio here: (be patient as the audio loads).
A fiery collision on the QEW in Burlington yesterday caused massive traffic headaches throughout the west end of the GTHA. OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt says a transport truck and a car collided on the QEW, near the Burlington Skyway shortly before 2pm. Both vehicles were travelling east (Toronto bound) when the truck struck the car, causing it to mount the guardrail and land on the west (Niagara) bound side of the highway. The car burst into flames but the two occupants were not seriously injured thanks to other motorists who stopped and assisted. All lanes of the Niagara bound QEW were closed from Northshore Blvd to the Eastport Dr exit as crews worked to remove a hydro pole that was struck during the collision and leaned dangerously over the highway. The lanes were finally reopened around 6:30pm but the traffic backup at that point had accumulated all the way into Oakville on the 403 and 407.
