Metro Newspapers Will Stop Publishing Next Month

The amount of editorial news voices in Canada is about to drop substantially. Torstar Corp. says its free StarMetro commuter newspapers will publish their final editions on December 20th. The move will result in the nationwide layoffs of 73 people working in editorial, advertising and distribution at the StarMetro papers published in Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto and Halifax. Torstar also announced plans to open new Star bureaus in coming weeks in Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary and Halifax, to be staffed by Star journalists who will provide local coverage.
