Nazem Kadri Is Gone As The Leafs Make A Splash On Day 1 Of The Free Agent Frenzy

The Leafs made a lot of moves yesterday including a deal to acquire defenceman Tyson Barrie, forward Alex Kerfoot and a 2020 sixth-round pick from Colorado. The Avalanche got back forward Nazem Kadri, Calle Rosen and a 2020 third-round pick. The Leafs also signed veteran centre Jason Spezza to a one-year, $700,000 deal. Spezza was playing for Dallas last season. Earlier, Toronto sent defenceman Nikita Zaitsev and forward Connor Brown to the Senators for defencemen Cody Ceci and Ben Harpur. The teams also swapped minor-league forwards with Michael Carcone going to the Leafs and Aaron Luchuk heading to Ottawa. Toronto also got a draft pick in the deal. Ron Hainsey signed with Ottawa as a free agent.

Prior to the opening of free agent season, the Leafs also signed Kapanen to a three-year contract extension ($3.2 million average annual value) and Johnsson to a four-year extension that carries an average annual value of $3.4 million.
