No More Academic Or Applied – Ontario Ends Streaming For Grade 9 Students

Premier Ford says the practice of forcing high school students to choose an academic or applied stream of study when they start Grade 9 is a sign of a broken system. Ford says streaming disproportionately affects Black and other racialized students, who are more likely to be enrolled in courses that don’t lead to university. He says Grade 9 is also too early to ask students to make choices that could affect the rest of their lives. Until now, students had to select their stream in the 8th grade, when preparing for high school. The government has announced it will be ending streaming for Grade 9 students on the grounds that it’s a discriminatory practice, but has not released any more details.
