The provincial government says it’s ending the practice of birth alerts that led to babies being seized from new mothers. Ontario is the last province to do away with the system that sees children’s aid societies send notifications to hospitals if they believe a newborn is at risk. The government says research shows birth alerts disproportionately target racialized families and must end by October 15th. It says children’s aid societies must instead work with hospitals and community-based service providers to come up with plans that better support families. The organization representing Ontario’s Children’s Aid Societies says it welcomes the government move.
