Pride Toronto Apologizes For Failing To Acknowledge The Lands Of Indigenous Communities

Pride Toronto is apologizing for displaying a land acknowledgment at the annual LGBTQ festival that did not mention any Indigenous communities. The sign encouraged people to connect with the land that they were on, but didn’t mention that that land is the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. The only reference the acknowledgment made to Indigenous communities was the inclusion of the Objibwe phrase “Chi Miigwetch,” meaning “thank you.” The organization says it failed the LGBTQ and two-spirited Indigenous community with the sign, and will strive to do better.
