The provincial government is going to set a firm end date to cancel all of the remaining “red and white” health cards. Ontario began phasing out the cards in 1994 in favour of the more modern ones with a photo ID. Now, the Ministry of Health is working with Service Ontario to set a final day after which red and white cards will no longer be accepted. A ministry spokesman says there are still 400,000 of the red and white cards in circulation. That is about 3% of all Ontario health cards.
