Iran’s “initial report” into the crash of the Ukrainian jetliner that killed 176 offered no immediate explanation as to why it happened. The report does say the crew did not declare an emergency or make a call for help. It says the plane was trying to turn back to the airport in Tehran when it went down. The report suggested a sudden emergency struck the Boeing 7-37 operated by Ukrainian International Airlines. It says the black boxes have been found, though some parts of their memory was lost. Investigators have ruled out laser or electromagnetic interference as causing the crash.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says 138 of the 176 passengers aboard the Kyiv-bound plane had connecting flights to Canada. They should have all been home by yesterday in Toronto. Trudeau says Canada’s Transportation Safety Board will be part of the team investigating the crash and vowed to get to the bottom of the mystery.
