Walmart has announced it will stop selling ammunition for assault rifles and handguns and will ban customers from openly carrying firearms inside across its 4,177 stores. The company will also stop selling handguns in Alaska, the only state where it sells them. It comes in the wake of two deadly mass shootings, one of which occurred in one a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas, during which 22 people were killed. The company’s CEO Doug McMillon made the announcement in a memo to employees yesterday. “After selling through our current inventory commitments, we will discontinue sales of short-barrel rifle ammunition such as the .223 caliber and 5.56 caliber that, while commonly used in some hunting rifles, can also be used in large capacity clips on military-style weapons,” he wrote.
