President Joe Biden has already signed into law a $1.9 trillion-dollar relief package that he says will help the US defeat COVID-19 and nurse the economy back to health. Biden had been set to sign the American Rescue Plan today. But the White House moved the signing up, hours before the president was to deliver his first prime-time address to the American public on the first anniversary of the pandemic.
Here is Biden’s speech:
Last night, President Joe Biden asked Americans to stay the course fighting the coronavirus while offering hope that life could begin to return to normal later this summer. In a prime time address, Biden outlined the steps his administration has taken to combat the deadly disease, and said the ‘goal’ was to have Americans enjoy July 4th with their loved ones. “July 4th with your loved one is the goal,” he said. “If we do all this, if we do our part, if we do this together by July Fourth there’s a good chance you and families and friends will be able to get together in your backyard or in your neighborhood and have a cookout or barbecue and celebrate Independence Day. That doesn’t mean large events, with lots of people together but it does mean small groups will be able to get together,” he said. “After this long hard year that will make this Independence Day something truly special where we not only mark our independence as a nation but we begin to mark our independence from this virus.”
