NASA is confirming the newest Mars rover completed its first sample grab last week, tucking away the tube of Martian rock for return to Earth. The Perseverance rover team reviewed photos of the core sample to confirm the grab was successful. The unexpectedly soft rock crumbled during the rover’s first sampling attempt in early August. The rover team sought out harder rock for the second try. Perseverance is seeking rocks that could contain evidence of past Martian life.
