Sotheby’s announced yesterday that Kayne West’s Nike Air Yeezy 1 Prototype has sold for a whopping $1.8 million through a private sale on RARES.
The sale made the prototype shoes the most valuable sneakers ever and marks the first sale for over $1 million. Kanye wore the shoes during the 50th Grammy Awards in 2008 where he performed “Hey Mama” and “Stronger”.
The shoes were meant to signal the start of a partnership for West and Nike before the rapper took his Yeezy brand to Adidas in 2013.
Brahm Wachter, the head of Sotheby’s streetwear and modern collectibles said, “We are thrilled with the result, which has nearly tripled the highest price on record. The sale speaks volumes of Kanye’s legacy as one of the most influential clothing and sneaker designers of our time, and of the Yeezy franchise he has built, which has become an industry titan. Furthermore, it builds on the recent growth in Sotheby’s sneakers, which is now offered across our Buy-Now marketplace, auction and private sales.”
